Dodgers split weekend, five headed
to All-Star game tonight
(From staff reports)
The Hornell Dodgers split both of their doubleheaders
this weekend against Cortland and Watertown on both Saturday and Sunday,
respectively. Hornell took a 5-3 advantage in the top of the seventh
inning against Cortland of the first game Saturday, only to have Cortland
come back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and win the
game with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Alex Lewis went 2-for-3
with a double, Doug Hargett was 2-for-4 with a triple, Bryan Swift
had a pinch-hit, two-run triple in the sixth inning and Dwayne Hammond
hit a two-run double in the seventh. Matt Wagner struck out six and
allowed just one hit to pick up the win in the second game on Saturday.
Hammond was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Lewis
had a two-run double in the second inning. Dan Stewart was the hard-luck
loser in the first game against Watertown on Sunday, as the Dodgers
outhit the Wizards 4-3, but also committed two key errors. In the
second game, Hornell made up for its lack of offense in Game 1 by
scoring six runs and limiting Watertown to just one. Darryl Chever
was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, Larry Best-Berfett went 2-for-4 with
a stolen base, while Lewis struck again, hitting a double and driving
in two runs. Hornell is now 13-13 on the season. They will take a
break tonight, as the NYCBL All-Star game is being played at McDonough
Park in Geneva. Matt Burke will be managing the Western Division team,
and Hornell will be represented by five players. Aaron Williams, Darryl
Chever, Matt Wagner, Ryan Barnett and Nick Silgendahl will all be
playing in the All-Star game tonight. The NYCBL All-Star game will
be televised on the Empire Sports Network at 7 p.m.
